The United Kingdom National
Committee of the International Association of
Painters, Sculptors and Engravers, affiliated to
the UNESCO, proposes that:
• Original prints may be both in black and
colour and struck from one or more printing
plates such as metal sheets, stones, screens and
wooden blocks by mainly the artist, and reflect
an original drawing or interpret the work of
another artist as the result of a collaboration.
• “Stage proofs” which reflect the developmental
stages of the working process, as well as
“artist’s proofs” , which are normally limited
to 10% of the total edition, should be included
in the end count of a series.
• If the series has been carried out by people,
their name may be included in the print.
In France, the Comité Nacional de la Gravure,
supported by the Chambre Syndicale de l’Estampe,
published the following definition in the
journal Nouvelles de l'Estampe of February 1965:
"Original prints are those carried out in black
or colour with one or more printing plate,
produced entirely by the artist using any kind
of technique except for mechanical or
photomechanical ones. Only these prints or
lithographs may be considered originals."
